One Jeopardy! contestant seems to have gotten a little too cocky during Tuesday night’s (Feb. 22) episode as he made a snarky comment to his fellow opponent, leaving many viewers with a sour taste.
The hit quiz show welcomed back Mayim Bialik as the host of the Teen Tournament Reunion. The three competitors featured in the episode — Avi Gupta, Jack Izzo and Alison Purcell — previously competed on the show in 2019, with Gupta taking home the first-place prize.
While vying for the $100k award as well as a spot on the 2023 Tournament of Champions, Gupta found himself falling behind in the first half of the show. When he landed on a Daily Double, he had $7,400 on the board — trailing behind Izzo’s $16k and Purcell’s $10.4k.
Betting all his earnings, Gupta correctly answered the clue which read, “This strong, lightweight metal was named for the dozen children of Gaia & Uranus,” bringing his total up to $14,800.
The former champion then made a dig at Izzo as he quietly said, “Not gonna get rid of me that easy,” to which his competitor replied, “Well done.”
Although Gupta ultimately won the tournament, which will see him advance to the semifinals, many Twitter users were not impressed with his sportsmanship — or lack thereof.
One wrote, “Anyone understand what Avi’s comment was after the double Jeopardy question? Seemed incredibly rude. Wanted him to lose just for that.”
Another commented, “He’s so arrogant,” while a third user added, “Not so likable anymore.”
“I couldn’t understand it either. If that is the case I am sorry he won,” someone else wrote after learning what Gupta said. “Everyone wants to win but it is how you handle it. I guess you get a big head after you win. You can still be humble and gracious towards your competitors, being a champion is much more than winning.”
Another fumed, “Avi is a jerk,” before someone else remarked, “Welp, Avi was annoying too.”
However, Gupta did have one person backing his trash talk as they wrote, “Seems like some people are scrutinizing Avi’s remark, but idk man. I wouldn’t have the guts to make some light banter like that, but good on Avi for making the comeback.”
Jeopardy! airs on weeknights at 7/6c on ABC.
