Manchester United joined the rest of the Premier League by taking a strong stance on the upcoming international break.

Premier League clubs will refuse to release players to participate in international matches in countries designated on the ‘red list’ by the Government.

This is due to the 10 days required to quarantine, which would mean returning players would not be available for two of the subsequent Premier League matches, BBC Sport report.

As noted on the Government website, Uruguay is one of the countries impacted, meaning Manchester United will not release Edinson Cavani.

Uruguay are scheduled to face Peru on September 3, Bolivia on September 5, and Ecuador on September 9.

The dates were totally farcical anyway, with three games crammed in, and Manchester United set to play Newcastle on September 10.

Even without the quarantine regulations, Cavani would not have made the Newcastle game if he went to represent his country.

With the quarantine, Cavani would have missed the Newcastle match, the midweek Champions League game, and the game against West Ham the following weekend.

But the striker does not seem happy. He posted a message on Instagram expressing puzzlement at the situation.

United have to stand firm

Manchester United have been more than generous with Edinson Cavani, allowing him extra time off this summer with his family after the Copa America.

This meant Cavani was not in United’s first two matchday squads, and he certainly could have been useful away at Southampton last weekend.

He quite possibly won’t be ready to start against Wolves this weekend either.

Unless he would be willing to forego his wages for a month, there is no benefit to United letting him leave, only to return possibly for a couple of matches in late September.

By keeping Cavani and standing firm, United are making the right call.

There will be another international break in October, where United face Liverpool directly after.

Both clubs have players due to fly to South America for those international fixtures and this will once again be a hot topic ahead of that game.

This is Cavani’s last season at United and the club clearly don’t want to waste it. He will just have to accept that.
