Dragon Ball Super: 10 Things That Annoyed Even Dedicated Fans - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Most Dragon Ball fans can remember where they were and what they were doing the moment Dragon Ball Super was officially announced. After several years of no new canon Dragon Ball content, Dragon Ball Super came right at the heels of Resurrection 'F', expanding the world of Dragon Ball by introducing alternate universes and new divine beings with powers that the Z-Fighters had never seen before.

While hardcore Dragon Ball fans definitely appreciated the series for what it was, they can all acknowledge its many faults. While these faults didn't make the show unwatchable by any means, it annoyed even the most hardcore fans who have always been quick to justify the many inconsistencies, retcons, and storytelling flaws of the franchise up to that point.

10 "Tingly Back" Super Saiyan Transformation

When Goku first debuted Super Saiyan during his battle with Frieza, fans everywhere were left in awe. Subsequently, Vegeta, Gohan, and Future Trunks awakened their own Super Saiyan transformations through long periods of training and situations of emotional stress. Fans were led to believe that Super Saiyan transformations were triggered by intense rage, with Universe 6's Cabba being no different.

He transformed after Vegeta predictably threatened his family and homeworld, but Kale and Caulifla were a completely different story. When Cabba taught them how to transform, he advised Caulifla to focus her power in the middle of her upper back. This not only sounded silly but also made the legendary transformation of the once-revered warrior race sound more like an itch that needed scratching than anything else.

9 The Strength Of Universe 6's Saiyans

Since Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and many of the other Z-Fighters had been in countless battles against foes of innumerable strength over the years, Dragon Ball Super ran into the challenge of introducing characters that would be strong enough to give them a challenge. When Cabba, Kale, and Caulifla were introduced, fans knew that there was no way they could provide a challenge for Goku and Vegeta, since they hadn't been in nearly enough battles, and while Goku and Vegeta had already mastered Super Saiyan Blue, these Saiyans were just now finding out about standard Super Saiyan.

Fans were shocked to see that even in the Tournament of Power, Kale and Caulifla gave Goku so much trouble, despite the fact that he was worn out after his first encounter with Jiren. It was cool to see female Super Saiyans finally step into the ring, but many fans were annoyed at just how strong they ended up getting in such a short amount of time when it took Goku years to get half as powerful.

8 New Super Saiyan Transformations Lose Their Splendor

Dragon Ball Super - God Super Saiyan transformations

Back in Dragon Ball Z, every new Super Saiyan transformation was an event. Some of the show's most iconic moments occurred when Saiyans debuted a new transformation. While Dragon Ball's revelation of the Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue transformations were definitely iconic moments, these transformations were quickly mastered by Goku and Vegeta, who tapped into them just as easily as they could their standard Super Saiyan forms.

Though these transformations relied on god ki, the expected changes in aura and hair color made them feel more like Super Saiyan 4 and 5 rather than transformations in a league all their own.

7 Goku & Vegeta Became The Only Reliable Z-Fighters

Vegeta and Goku vs Kochiarator

Back in Dragon Ball Z, it was always a Saiyan who landed the final blow, but they couldn't get anything done without their Earthling allies. Gohan's Kamehameha might've killed Cell, but without the other Z-Fighters there to distract him, he wouldn't have overpowered Cell's Solar Kamehameha. Likewise, without the intervention of Hercule and Majin Buu, Kid Buu would've had his way with Universe 7.

In Dragon Ball Super, Goku and Vegeta became the only two Z-Fighter strong enough to handle many of the god-level threats to Earth. Sure, the Tournament of Power gave many other characters the spotlight, but the most significant moments in the tournament revolved around the battles Goku and Vegeta had against foes like Jiren and Toppo. It would've been nice to see more Z-Fighters stand alongside Goku and Vegeta during their battles against foes like Golden Frieza and Zamasu.

6 The Repetitive First Two Arcs

Dragon Ball Super - Beerus vs Goku and Frieza vs Vegeta

When Dragon Ball Super returned, many fans were disappointed that the first two arcs in the series would be a retelling of the Dragon Ball Z movies Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F'. The anime made an effort to spice things up a bit; Bulma's birthday party took place on a cruise ship in the anime rather than her backyard (as it did in Battle of Gods), and Tagoma served as a major threat in the anime while he was killed by Frieza early-on in Resurrection 'F'.

Despite these changes, fans found the first 27 episodes of Dragon Ball Super to be a drag to sit through, since the same major plot points were hit in both the anime and the movies.

5 The Inconsistent Animation Quality

Dragon Ball Super - Goku Versus Beerus, Bad Animation

Many anime series are praised for their stellar animation, with some, like Demon Slayer's 19th episode, going above and beyond. While Dragon Ball Super has featured some top-tier animation during some of its most important action sequences, the quality, especially towards the beginning of the series, was often inconsistent.

Characters were drawn off-model in some cases, and in at other times, it was easy to tell that the animators had been rushed. For the Dragon Ball Super home releases, critical backlash prompted Toei Animation to fix these errors, but at that point, fans wanted nothing to do with the series' earlier episodes.

4 Lackluster Fight Choreography

Powerful transformations and bright, flashy attacks make it hard not to get sucked into each and every Dragon Ball fight, but many fans complained that the fight choreography in Dragon Ball Super was lacking.

Not only were frames frequently reused (often taken straight from the arc's opening), but characters seemed to engage in bouts of lightning-fast punches and ki blast exchanges without the intricate choreography that made most of Dragon Ball Z's fights so spectacular.

3 Jiren's Lackluster Backstory

While his strength might've been impressive, Jiren's backstory didn't raise too many eyebrows. It was the standard "evil villain killing one's family and friends" story that many fans of anime are very familiar with.

While this did explain what motivated Jiren to become so strong in the first place, it provided little substance that would allow fans to empathize with Jiren and see him other than a personified plot device to further challenge Goku.

2 Gohan's Downfall & Fade From The Spotlight

Similar to Goku, fans have watched Gohan grow from a young boy to a man, but unlike Goku, he was forced to fight against stronger foes at a younger age. While Goku remained Dragon Ball Z's main protagonist, Gohan's rise to greatness, fall from glory, and second coming are chronicled throughout the entirety of Dragon Ball Z.

Many fans were disappointed to see that even after awakening his hidden potential, Gohan could barely go Super Saiyan at the start of Dragon Ball Super. If anything, this further gave Goku and Vegeta the right to hog all the action. The Tournament of Power led to Gohan reawakening his lost potential, and while he definitely didn't disappoint, it wouldn't be too hard for him to abandon martial arts in favor of scholarship as he's already done twice now.

1 Noticeable Change In Goku's Personality

Dragon Ball Super - Goku confused by Copy Vegeta

Goku's pretty much remained the same person since he was a little kid. However, many fans felt as though Dragon Ball Super's depiction of him paled in comparison to his depiction back in Z, with many claiming that he often acted a lot dumber than he used to. The Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z might've blinded some fans to the childlike persona he always possessed that was just lost in translation.

When Dragon Ball Super's original Japanese dub was the only dub of the show that was available, it became impossible for many fans to deal with this new version of Goku that they didn't grow up with.
